Dynamics of pesticide detoxification system of polyphagous insect pest Helicoverpa armigera

At A Glance

Identification and characterization of plant derived proteinaceous inhibitors of gut digestive enzymes of polyphagous insect pest Helicoverpa armigera Hübner

We are designing Si-nano-protein conjugates for delivery of the active proteins or other biomolecules to plant systems for a variety of applications.  On the other hand, we are investigating the uptake of CdTe quantum dots in plant system through root and leaf exposure. The distribution, accumulation, persistence and the effects DQs have on the plant systems are being investigated.

Huge demands are driving the medicinal and aromatic plants to extinction from wild habitats. The alternative bio-technologies for native plant species from India will be necessary to protect the species.

Areas of Focus

Plant & Insect

We apply metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis to map the specialized metabolites and their biosynthetic pathway genes. Further we try to use in vitro methods like plant cell culture, root culture and transgenic roots/plants to develop a biotechnological platform for specialized metabolite biosynthesis.

Neha Shintre

As a joint PhD student with Dr. Neelima Deshpande, Neha is working on the enzyme inhibitors of bacterial origin. She has recently joined the RUSA team to work on woody species diversity of Western Ghats. Her interests in science broadly lie in ecological interactions at organismal and chemical levels. Before joining PhD, Neha was a lecturer at Abasaheb Garware College, Pune and has worked as a research fellow on Maharashtra Gene Bank Program at IISER, Pune. Besides work, she likes to cook in her free time and is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer.

Vedangi Hayatnagarkar
I am passionately curious, like to understand any concept deeply, and always try to link my imagination to my understanding, that’s how I love science.

Supriya Acharya

Ms Supriya Acharya works as a PhD Scholar in Dr. Vaijayanti Tamhane’s Lab since March 2019. She is currently involved with molecular cloning of Cytochrome P450 enzymes of a rare medicinal tree- Oroxylum indicum. Her expertise in present laboratory lies in molecular cloning, culturing of transgenic plants and transfusion in Nicotiana tabacum and benthamiana plant system. She is also actively involved in in-silico analysis of P450 enzymes and has trained four third year students in molecular docking using Autodock tools. Before joining IBB under Dr. Vaijayanti, Supriya has two years’ experience in Plant tissue culture, she also worked as research analyst in Pharmaceutical company plant in Nashik for a year. In her leisure time, she does gardening and practices Art therapy.

Javed Mulla

Javed has joined as PhD scholar and working under SERB-DST funded project. He is working on plant protein and insect interactions. His interests in science broadly lie in elucidating molecular aspects of plant defensin protein in insect growth retardation. Before joining PhD, Javed worked in research and development department of Chitale Dairy, Bhilawadi, Sangli and IABRD (A division of Nirav Biosolutions), Balewadi. Besides work, he likes to cook in his catering services and read holy books.
